Có lẽ khi biết được tường tận nghi lễ cưới truyền thống của người Việt , nhiều người sẽ kinh ngạc vì nó quá cầu kỳ, phức tạp, đầy lễ tiết. Từ khi hai nhà chính thức có hôn ước với nhau, phải trải qua khá nhiều nghi thức: từ nạp thái, vấn danh, nạp cát, nạp tệ, đến thỉnh kỳ (lễ hỏi), thân nghinh (lễ cưới)… Vậy lễ ăn hỏi có ý nghĩa như thế nào trong nghi lễ cưới truyền thống?
Xã hội ngày càng hiện đại, các đôi uyên ương ngoài tiếp thu văn hóa phương Tây, cộng thêm phần bận rộn cuộc sống nên đã tối giản đáng kể các lễ trên. Chủ yếu giờ chỉ còn 3 lễ chính: dạm ngõ, ăn hỏi và lễ cưới. Đôi khi vì điều kiện kinh tế và cách trở địa lý, một số nơi chỉ thực hiện lễ ăn hỏi và lễ cưới, hay thậm chí chỉ còn độc nhất một lễ cưới mà thôi.
Đủ lễ mới đủ đầy
Một khi đôi trẻ đã được nhà trai và nhà gái “thông qua”, thì việc đi lại tìm hiểu nhau sẽ trở nên chính thức sau lễ dạm ngõ. Tiếp ngay sau là lễ ăn hỏi, còn gọi là lễ đính hôn, đây được xem như cột mốc quan trọng trong việc hiểu ngầm rằng cả hai đã “để dành” nhau. Lễ ăn hỏi thường diễn ra trước khoảng nửa tháng, một tháng hoặc vài tháng trước lễ cưới tùy theo từng gia đình.

Trong phong tục truyền thống hôn nhân của người Việt, lễ ăn hỏi quan trọng không kém lễ cưới, nó chính là tiền đề quan trọng mở ra mối quan hệ gắn bó cho hai nhà từ đây trở về sau.

– Nhà trai mang các tráp (mâm quả) lễ vật đến “nói chuyện” với nhà gái, thường thì có 5, 7 hoặc 9 mâm tùy gia đình, nhưng phải có: vàng cưới (nhẫn, dây chuyền hoặc hoa tai đính hôn), tiền dẫn cưới, rượu, trầu cau, bánh xu xê, trái cây tươi hoặc nếu có điều kiện thì thêm xôi gấc gà luộc, lợn sữa quay, bánh kem… Ngoài tráp phủ vải đỏ, bên trong đính nhiều biểu tượng bằng giấy, hình trái tim đỏ có chữ song hỷ cách điệu màu vàng, người ta tin đây chính là những điều mang lại may mắn, hạnh phúc mỹ mãn cho đôi uyên ương.
– Sau phần lễ trên bàn thờ gia tiên, nhà gái sẽ “lại quả” một phần lễ này cho nhà trai mang về. Phần còn lại sẽ được chia nhỏ ra biếu người thân, láng giềng như một cách thông báo con gái nhà mình sắp thành gia thất. Thường thì ngoài việc báo tin lễ ăn hỏi, nhiều gia đình còn gửi kèm cả thiệp báo hỷ nếu ngày cưới được tổ chức gần ngay sau đó.
– Lễ hỏi thường diễn ra trong phạm vi nhỏ, tham dự chủ yếu là các mối quan hệ đặc biệt thân thiết. Ngoài ba mẹ, họ hàng gần hai bên còn có bạn bè thân thiết của cô dâu chú rể hoặc thêm vài người lớn tuổi gần nhà chứng kiến.
– Sẽ có một buổi tiệc nhỏ nhà gái chuẩn bị để mời nhà trai và những người tham dự sau phần nghi lễ. Đây như một lời cảm ơn từ nhà gái vì sự có mặt của mọi người trong ngày quan trọng của con gái mình, đồng thời tạo hòa khí tốt đẹp cho cả hai bên gia đình. Sau lễ này cả hai đã được xem như thành đôi, có thể đối đãi với nhau như vợ chồng và đương nhiên bắt đầu gọi hai bên là ba mẹ. Một số người còn chính thức tham gia giúp đỡ việc nhà như những thành viên thực sự trong gia đình.
